The Framework
When facing any significant decision, run it through these 5 filters. Each filter reveals a different dimension of the choice.
๐งญ Filter 1: Directional
"Does this align with where I want to go?"
Tests strategic alignment. Will this decision move you toward your stated goals or away from them?
๐จ Filter 2: Preferential
"Do I actually want this, or do I just not want the alternative?"
Tests desire authenticity. Distinguishes between moving toward something vs. running away from something.
๐ง Filter 3: Epistemological
"How do I know what I think I know?"
Tests information quality. Are you working with facts, assumptions, or beliefs? What's the evidence?
โฐ Filter 4: Temporal
"How will I feel about this in 10 minutes? 10 months? 10 years?"
Tests time perspective. Reveals short-term vs. long-term tradeoffs and future regret potential.
๐ Filter 5: Optionality
"Does this increase or decrease my future options?"
Tests reversibility and flexibility. Can you undo this? Does it open doors or close them?
