The 3-Level Causal Model
Most people stay trapped at Level 1, treating symptoms that keep returning. This framework shows you how to ascend to Level 3 — where you redesign the structure that creates problems in the first place.
What this looks like:
- Changing beliefs or identity-level patterns
- Redesigning workflows or relationships
- Addressing root causes, not triggers
- One-time fixes that prevent recurrence
Example: Instead of forcing yourself to wake up earlier (Level 1), redesign your evening routine and environment so early sleep happens naturally.
What this looks like:
- Implementing new habits or procedures
- Changing responses to triggers
- Process improvements
- Requires ongoing maintenance
Example: Using a calendar blocking system to protect focus time, or establishing a weekly review ritual.
What this looks like:
- Putting out fires as they arise
- Symptom management
- Crisis response
- Problems keep returning
Example: Drinking coffee to compensate for poor sleep, or working weekends to catch up on delayed projects.
The Cycle Breaker
Apply the framework to your current challenge:
Map Your Current Cycle
What recurring problem drains your energy? Describe the symptom and when it appears.
Ask "Why" Five Times
Trace backward from the symptom to find contributing factors and root causes.
Identify Your Level
Are you currently solving at Level 1, 2, or 3? Be honest.
Design Your Level 3 Solution
What would change if you addressed the root? What system redesign would make this problem impossible?
Commit to One Action
What's the smallest structural change you can implement this week?
When to Use This Framework
🔄 Recurring Problems
The same issue keeps coming back despite your best efforts to solve it.
😤 Chronic Frustration
You're working harder but not seeing results. Energy is high, impact is low.
🎯 Before Big Decisions
About to invest time or money in a solution? Check which level it operates at.
🔥 Cascade Failures
One problem triggers another in a chain. Need to find the upstream source.
